Top 25 and Serie Bleue

The French equivalent of Ordnance Survey Maps

IGN Top 25 maps cover areas of particular tourist interest, mainly around the coast, and have a map number ending in T. The maps have an overprint highlighting local footpaths, long-distance GR routes and, where appropriate, ski routes. Other tourist information includes campsites, equestrian or canoeing centres, huts, mountain refuges, etc. Map legend is in French and English. Each TOP 25 map covers an area of approximately 28 x 21 km (17 x 13 miles).

The rest of France is covered by Serie Bleue maps, which have no overprint and map numbers ending in O or E. The legend is in French only but is fairly self-explanatory. Each Serie Bleue map covers an area of approximately 20 x 14 km (12 x 9 miles), with some maps slightly larger.

Both series have similar cartography, with contour interval of 5 metres, except for mountainous areas, where the maps have hill shading and contours at 10-metre intervals. Scale 1:25000

Generally, Top 25 Maps are £8.99 and Serie Bleue £7.99.

Corse-du-Sud/Haute-Corse (Michelin Local Maps) -  Corse-du-Sud / Haute-Corse region, this laminated fold-out map includes a complete index of place names and covers all regional specialities, heritage and traditions. It offers clear and concise mapping for stress-free travelling. Published March 08

Topo Guides to Long Distance Footpaths in France - Light, pocket-size guides to the Sentiers de Grande Randonnee, the GR routes, a dense network of long-distance footpaths across the French countryside. Each topo-guide covers either a circular route, or part of a longer path: the GR5 between Lake Geneva and the Mediterranean, for example, is covered by four topo-guides. Some titles will have limited availability - in case of difficulty please email.

The guides have extracts from the 1:50,000 topographic survey, overprinted with the route. The descriptions of the route are divided into short sections, according to the difficulty of the terrain, and are always placed next to the maps for easy reference. The text is in French, but a large amount of information is conveyed by symbols. A list of all the main points along the route indicates what facilities can be found there: public transport, food shops, and all types of accommodation (gites d'etape, campsites, mountain refuges, hotels, etc.) with addresses and telephone numbers.

Corsica Trekking GR20, David Abram - A mountain range rising from the sea, Corsica holds the most arrestingly beautiful landscapes in the Mediterranean. From its cobalt blue gulfs and shell-sand beaches, hillsides of evergreen maquis give way to pristine oak, chestnut and pine forests, awesome gorges, alpine lakes and a spine of snow-streaked peaks and passes. Among the many trails that penetrate its remotest corners, the GR20, following the island's watershed, is a high-level route that has won an international reputation as being Europe's most challenging long-distance path. 35 detailed trekking maps - showing walking times, places to stay and points of interest, with detailed route descriptions for the entire GR20. Published Jan 08

ISBN: 9781873756980 - Corsica Trekking GR20

Trekking in Corsica, David Abram - I bought this book and later discovered that there was a specific guide to the GR20 and bought that too. Despite being an overall guide to Trekking in Corsica the Abram book is far superior. In fact I would go so far as to say that if you read the Abram book you could write your own guide, without even going there! Despite both being written in the same year the information in the Abram book is first class and accurate. Of course it was only a few months old too, that will change with time. This is the only book you'll need! Buyer Review. Published Feb 03

Rough Guide to Corsica Ed 5 - Explore every corner of this beautiful island with the revised fifth edition of the "Rough Guide to Corsica". The 24-page, full-colour introduction will inspire you on where to go and what to see, from the spectacular views of Spenlunca Gorge to the blissfully unspoilt beach of La Plage d'Arone. The new author picks' section highlights the island's best hotels and restaurants, plus there are hundreds of listings of all the top resorts, bars, clubs and shops to suit all budgets. The guide takes a detailed look at Corsica's historic sites from megalithic Filitosa to Napoleon's birthplace in Ajaccio, with an informed background on Corsican history, culture and wildlife. There is plenty of practical advice on outdoor activities, including hiking the famous GR20 route. The guide comes complete with maps and plans for the whole island. Published April 06. New Edition May 09
